Place of Assembly permit (50 or more occupants): San Francisco restaurant guide
SF Fire Department — Bureau of Fire Prevention
What it is
An annual operational fire permit for any restaurant, bar or room that holds 50 or more people; SFFD inspects exits, occupant-load posting and fire safety before approving it.
When a restaurant needs it
Occupant load of 50 or more (the City's restaurant guide: 'Place of Assembly (50+ occupancy)'; DBI: 'more than 49 people').
How to apply
Submit the fire permit application at the Fire Permit Center (49 South Van Ness, Suite 560) at least 5 business days before opening with approved floor plans (max 11x17) showing occupancy classification and occupant load; SFFD inspects, then issues the annual permit.
Documents you’ll need
- Fire permit application
- Approved floor plans with occupancy classification and occupant load
- Business Registration Certificate / tax license
- Proof of general liability insurance (temporary permits)
Good to know
The Entertainment Commission requires the Place of Assembly permit before it will hear a Limited Live Performance or Place of Entertainment application when occupancy is 50 or more.
