Certified Food Safety Manager: San Francisco restaurant guide
SFDPH / California Retail Food Code
What it is
At least one person at the restaurant — owner, manager, chef or cook — must hold a food safety manager certificate from an ANSI-accredited exam provider; DPH asks for it on the health permit application.
When a restaurant needs it
Before you apply for the Permit to Operate (state law allows 60 days after opening, but DPH's application asks for it up front).
How to apply
Take an accredited Food Protection Manager course and exam (online-proctored or in person).
Documents you’ll need
- Photo ID for the exam
- Certificate kept on site for inspectors
Good to know
Inspectors ask for the certificate on site; if your certified person leaves you have 60 days to replace them.
