Backflow prevention assembly (SFPUC Cross-Connection Control) + annual test: San Francisco restaurant guide
SF Public Utilities Commission — Water Quality Division
What it is
A backflow prevention assembly is required whenever a potential hazard exists on the premises — carbonators (soda systems), boilers, steam equipment, dishwashers; SFPUC tracks the assembly and requires an annual test by an authorized tester.
When a restaurant needs it
Installing or modifying water service, a soda/carbonation system, boiler or other cross-connection hazard.
How to apply
Your plumber installs the assembly shown on the plumbing plans; the property owner hires an authorized tester (one holding an SFDPH Permit to Operate) who submits results to SFPUC within 5 days of the test.
Documents you’ll need
- Plumbing plans showing the assembly
- Device make/model and serial
- Annual test report
Good to know
Cross-Connection Control Program: (650) 652-3199, backflow@sfwater.org. A boiler with a backflow assembly must have the assembly certified before DBI issues the boiler Permit to Operate.
