SLA Method of Operation — hours, music, dancing (disclosure & change application): New York City restaurant guide

NYS Liquor Authority

What it is

Your liquor license is approved for a specific 'method of operation': hours, live/DJ/recorded music, dancing, private events, security, outdoor areas. There is no city cabaret or late-hours license; this disclosure and any Community Board stipulations are what legally set how late you stay open and what entertainment you can offer.

When a restaurant needs it

Every alcohol applicant discloses it; file a Method of Operation Change application before adding entertainment, dancing or later hours after licensing.

How to apply

Describe hours and entertainment accurately in the application and the Community Board Standardized Notice Form; to change later, submit the Method of Operation Change application to the SLA (80 South Swan Street, Suite 900, Albany, NY 12210) and keep operating under the old approval until written approval arrives.

Good to know

NYC's legal closing time is 4:00 AM (8 AM–4 AM weekdays, 10 AM–4 AM Sundays), but Community Boards routinely ask applicants to stipulate earlier closings; the stipulations become part of your license. Operating outside your approved method of operation is a common SLA violation.
