DOT canopy authorization & permit (sidewalk canopy on poles): New York City restaurant guide

NYC DOT

What it is

A canopy is a cover over the sidewalk held up by poles embedded in the sidewalk. Because it occupies the public right-of-way it needs a DOT canopy authorization and an annual maintenance permit, plus a one-time Street Opening Permit to set the poles.

When a restaurant needs it

Installing a pole-supported sidewalk canopy at your entrance.

How to apply

Apply per NYC DOT Street Works Manual §3.4.1 (canopy authorization application to DOT Highway Inspection and Quality Assurance); renewals go by mail to the DOT Permit Management Office, 55 Water Street – Concourse, New York, NY 10041, Attn: Canopy Unit.

Documents you’ll need

Fee
Annual maintenance permit renewal $50; initial authorization and Street Opening Permit fees — see DOT
Processing time
Varies
Renewal
Annually — renew at least one month before the maintenance permit expires
Who files
The building owner holds the canopy permit; an expediter or architect usually files.

Good to know

Most restaurants use a wall-mounted awning (DOB) and never need this. Only pole-supported canopies over the sidewalk go through DOT.
