DOB sign permit: New York City restaurant guide

NYC DOB

What it is

The permit for storefront signage. Signs smaller than six square feet that are not illuminated don't need a permit; larger signs and any illuminated sign do.

When a restaurant needs it

Sign over 6 sq ft, OR any illuminated sign.

How to apply

Sign (SG) permit filed in DOB NOW: Build by a licensed sign hanger or registered design professional; the electrical connection needs a separate electrical permit by a licensed electrician.

Documents you’ll need

Fee
Ground or wall sign: the alteration filing fee plus $5 per 100 sq ft of sign area (not less than $35); illuminated signs also pay an annual use fee of $45 / $70 / $0.75 per sq ft (min $130) by size (NYC Admin Code §28-112.2)
Processing time
Varies
Renewal
Illuminated signs extending past the building line: annual permit
Who files
Filed by a licensed sign hanger or a registered architect/engineer; wiring by a licensed electrician.

Good to know

Confirmed on DOB: the six-square-foot exemption applies to non-illuminated signs only. Illuminated signs that project beyond the building line need an annual illuminated sign permit.
