South Coast AQMD Rule 222 filing (chain-driven charbroilers; small boilers): Los Angeles restaurant guide

South Coast AQMD

What it is

Instead of a full air permit, certain small equipment must be registered ("filed") with the air district under Rule 222. Chain-driven charbroilers are covered by Rule 1138 and must use a certified catalytic oxidizer; boilers and process heaters below the permit threshold also file under Rule 222.

When a restaurant needs it

Using a chain-driven (conveyor) charbroiler, or installing a boiler/water heater covered by Rule 222.

How to apply

File online through the Rule 222 program (about 20 minutes) or mail the PDF form with payment; keep maintenance records five years.
