Commercial trash & organics service (RecycLA franchise + SB 1383): Los Angeles restaurant guide
LA Sanitation / CalRecycle
What it is
Businesses in the City must use the commercial waste hauler franchised for their zone under RecycLA, and California's SB 1383 requires organics recycling and, for larger food businesses, donation of edible food.
When a restaurant needs it
Before opening; every restaurant.
How to apply
Identify your RecycLA zone hauler, set up trash, recycling and organics (food scrap) service, and register for edible-food recovery if you meet the state thresholds.
Documents you’ll need
- Service address
- Expected volumes / bin sizes
- Organics container plan for the kitchen
Good to know
The City is divided into recycLA service zones, each with one assigned hauler — find yours on the recycLA Service Zone Map or call LASAN's 24-hour Customer Care Center at 800-773-2489. All commercial businesses must take organics (green bin) service unless LASAN grants a waiver, and larger food businesses (SB 1383 Tier 1/Tier 2 edible food generators) must contract with a food recovery organization and file the City's annual compliance form.
