Backflow Prevention (Cross-Connection Control): Washington, D.C. restaurant guide
DC Water — Customer Compliance
What it is
Backflow prevention assemblies protect the public water supply from your equipment (e.g., carbonated beverage systems, dishwashers, fire sprinklers). They must be installed, tested annually and reported to DC Water.
When a restaurant needs it
Wherever the plumbing code or DC Water requires a backflow preventer. Most restaurant kitchens have at least one.
How to apply
Get the device approved on your DOB/DC Water plans; a certified Backflow Service Provider installs and tests it and reports results to DC Water.
Documents you’ll need
- Plumbing plans showing backflow assemblies
- Annual test report from a certified tester
Good to know
Which devices you need depends on your equipment and the plumbing code; your plumber/engineer determines this.
