City of Miami Business Tax Receipt (BTR): Miami restaurant guide
City of Miami — Business Licensing
What it is
The City's business license (formerly 'occupational license'). Every business operating in the City of Miami needs one.
When a restaurant needs it
After your Certificate of Use is approved and your state food service license is issued, and before you open.
How to apply
Apply through MiamiBiz Intake, resolve any flagged issues, pay the emailed invoice, and receive an interim BTR by email.
Documents you’ll need
- Approved Certificate of Use
- FEIN (or SSN if trading under your legal name)
- State of Florida license (DBPR food service license for restaurants)
- Government-issued photo ID
- Professional license and SSN for each licensed professional (state-regulated professions only)
Fee
Varies — see City invoice (no fee schedule is published on the BTR page).
Processing time
Varies; the interim BTR arrives by email after the invoice is paid.
Renewal
Annually. Renew by September 30, the end of the City's fiscal year.
Who files
The owner or an authorized agent files online on MiamiBiz.
Good to know
The City BTR does not replace the Miami-Dade County Local Business Tax Receipt. You need both.
