Backflow Prevention Assembly — Installation & Annual Test: Miami restaurant guide

Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD)

What it is

A device that stops contaminated water flowing back into the public water supply. WASD requires certain assemblies (domestic RPPA, fire-line DCVA/DCDA) to be tested at installation and annually.

When a restaurant needs it

When your water service, fire sprinkler line or plumbing creates a cross-connection hazard requiring an assembly (common for restaurants with fire sprinklers or carbonation/chemical equipment). Confirm with WASD.

How to apply

A licensed plumber installs the assembly under a City plumbing permit, then a certified tester tests it and submits the report on WASD's Tokay portal.

Documents you’ll need

Fee
Tester fees set by private companies; installation permit fees via City Building Department.
Processing time
About 1 week.
Renewal
Annual test for assemblies that require it.
Who files
Installed by a licensed plumber; tested and reported by a WASD-recognized certified backflow tester.

Good to know

Missed annual tests generate WASD notices. Put the test date on your renewal calendar.
