Zoning Approval (BACP/Zoning Review of the License): Chicago restaurant guide
Chicago Zoning Administration (via BACP)
What it is
Every Chicago business license is checked by zoning before it is processed. The location must be properly zoned and non-residential for your exact use.
When a restaurant needs it
Every restaurant, at license application. Check it yourself before you sign a lease.
How to apply
Look up the district on the Chicago Zoning Map (Chicago.gov/ZoningMap), then submit your license application. BACP routes it to zoning review. For a definitive answer before leasing, request a zoning advisory or opinion letter.
Documents you’ll need
- Address and floor/suite
- Description of use (restaurant with or without liquor, entertainment)
- Floor plan / site plan
Good to know
In B1 and B2 districts only a 'Limited Restaurant' is allowed (no liquor, or liquor that is clearly incidental to food). A 'General Restaurant' (liquor with meals plus enclosed live entertainment/dancing) needs B3 or a C district. A tavern is a special use in B3.
