Illinois Food Handler Training: Chicago restaurant guide

Illinois Department of Public Health

What it is

Illinois requires every food handler (anyone working with unpackaged food, food-contact surfaces or utensils) to complete ANSI-accredited food handler training.

When a restaurant needs it

Within 30 days of hire, then every 3 years.

How to apply

Have each employee take an ANSI-accredited food handler course online. IDPH approves internal programs only for non-restaurant establishments.

Documents you’ll need

Fee
Set by the training provider
Processing time
A few hours online
Renewal
Every 3 years
Who files
Each employee completes the training; the owner keeps the records.

Good to know

Staff who already hold a CFPM or Food Service Sanitation Manager certificate are exempt. Keep the records ready because CDPH inspectors ask for them.
