Wholesale Food Processor/Distributor License: Boston restaurant guide
MA DPH — Food Protection Program
What it is
If you sell food to another business that resells it or uses it as an ingredient, Massachusetts requires a state wholesale license and state inspection, on top of your Boston retail permit.
When a restaurant needs it
Selling packaged food wholesale to stores, cafés or other businesses.
How to apply
Apply online through the DPH Environmental Health eLicensing Portal for an Initial Wholesale Food Processing/Distribution License (a separate application for each site or activity), then pass the state inspection.
Documents you’ll need
- Wholesale license application
- Product list and labels
- Facility floor plan
- Process descriptions
Good to know
Food manufacturing facilities must also register with the FDA (free, renewed every two years). Off-site catering uses the Boston caterer permit category ($325) instead.
