Valet Parking Permit: Boston restaurant guide

Boston Transportation Department

What it is

Lets a restaurant set aside curb space on a public street for valet drop-off and pickup. BTD reviews it with the Police Department and the Licensing Board and notifies your district city councilor, who may hold a public meeting.

When a restaurant needs it

Only if you want valet service at the curb.

How to apply

Submit the valet parking application in person or by mail to BTD, Room 721, City Hall, with the zone location/dimensions, hours, vehicle volume, attendant plan and a letter from the off-street lot you'll use.

Documents you’ll need

Fee
$40 per foot of curb space per year, plus $150 every five years per valet sign
Processing time
Response within about two months; one-day permits need five business days' notice
Renewal
Annual; permits run July 1–June 30
Who files
The restaurant or its valet operator applies.

Good to know

Renewals must show evidence that you actually used the off-street lot the prior year.
