What it is

Permit for minor alterations that don't change the building's structure or use, such as refreshing an existing restaurant or replacing an existing sign.

When a restaurant needs it

Taking over an existing restaurant with light, non-structural work and no change of use.

How to apply

The licensed contractor applies through the Inspectional Services online portal; in-person applications at 1010 Mass. Ave., 5th floor, still require completing the portal.

Contractor's license and liability insurance
MA Workers' Compensation Affidavit
Site Safety Plan Affidavit
Mattocks-Higgins Affidavit

Fee

$20 application fee plus $10 per $1,000 of estimated work cost

Work must start within 6 months

Who files

Filed in the licensed contractor's name.

Good to know

If the work touches egress, occupancy or life-safety systems, expect ISD to require a long form instead.
