Crowd Manager Training Certificates (bars, nightclubs and dance venues with 100+ occupants): Boston restaurant guide
Massachusetts Department of Fire Services (enforced by Boston Fire and the ABCC)
What it is
Under the state fire code (527 CMR 1, §20.1.5.6), an assembly space with a legal occupant load of 100 or more that is run as a nightclub, dance hall, discothèque or bar — or has a live band/recorded music with a designated dance area — must have trained crowd managers on duty whenever open: one per 250 occupants.
When a restaurant needs it
Occupant load of 100+ and you operate as a bar/nightclub or have dancing with live or recorded music. Ordinary restaurants and venues with fixed seating are exempt.
How to apply
Each crowd manager completes the free 40-minute online DFS course and passes the test (70%), then keeps the certificate on site and completes the daily Fire and Building Safety Checklist before opening.
Documents you’ll need
- Crowd manager completion certificates
- Daily Fire and Building Safety Checklists (kept on site 1 year)
Good to know
The ABCC charges violations under 527 CMR 1.05 §20.1.5.6.4; missing checklists are a common citation.
