Certificate of Inspection: Boston restaurant guide
Boston ISD (Building Division) & Boston Fire Department
What it is
An annual building safety certificate that the Food Service Permit, CV, alcohol and entertainment licenses require for places with 50+ capacity or alcohol service.
When a restaurant needs it
Restaurants with capacity of 50 or more, or any that serve alcohol.
How to apply
After building inspections are complete, submit 3 sets of plans stamped with capacity approvals from ISD and BFD to ISD Counter 3A and await the ISD/BFD inspection. It is renewed every year (invoices go out about 2 months before expiration).
Documents you’ll need
- Certificate of Occupancy
- Floor plan with capacity
- Fire system test/inspection reports
Good to know
Boston doesn't publish a standalone application page or fee for this certificate. Ask ISD (617-635-5300) to schedule it as soon as your CO is close.
