Business Certificate (DBA / trade name): Boston restaurant guide
Boston City Clerk
What it is
Registers the name you operate under with the City if it differs from your legal name (applies to LLCs and corporations using a trade name, too). Entertainment and other licenses ask for it.
When a restaurant needs it
Once you have a Boston address (signed lease) and before applying for City licenses.
How to apply
File the notarized Business Certificate form in person at City Hall (issued same day) or by mail (2–3 business days). There is no online filing.
Documents you’ll need
- Completed, notarized Business Certificate form
- Business address (no P.O. box or virtual office)
- Names and home addresses of all owners
- Signed lease or notarized landlord letter
Good to know
The City Clerk notarizes the form free on site — bring photo ID. Late renewals can cost up to $100 per month, capped at $300.
