Sidewalk Café Permit / License Agreement (incl. Street Patio): Austin restaurant guide
Austin Transportation & Public Works — Right-of-Way
What it is
Permission to put tables in the public sidewalk (or a parking-lane street patio) next to your restaurant.
When a restaurant needs it
Any seating in the public right-of-way.
How to apply
In AB+C choose 'Apply for Right of Way Permits / Special Events' then 'Public Space Management' and upload the application, insurance, owner authorization and construction documents.
Documents you’ll need
- Completed application
- Insurance (liquor liability $1,000,000 if serving alcohol)
- Proof of ownership / Fee Title Owner authorization form
- Adjacent property contacts
- Copy of TABC permit (if serving alcohol)
- Site plan, elevations and three photos
Good to know
Barriers are required only when alcohol is served. Historic districts and Walk of Stars areas need extra approval. A temporary sidewalk café permit lasts up to five years and can cost less than the permanent license agreement.
