Natural Gas Service (Texas Gas Service meter/service line) + City Gas Piping Permit & Pressure Test: Austin restaurant guide

Texas Gas Service / City of Austin DSD (plumbing)

What it is

Two linked approvals: the City plumbing (gas) permit under which a licensed plumber installs and air-tests the gas piping to your cooking equipment, and the utility's new or upsized meter/service line, which Texas Gas Service sets only after the City's gas inspection is approved and released.

When a restaurant needs it

Any restaurant installing, extending or upsizing natural-gas cooking equipment or piping.

How to apply

Register and submit a 'new request' in the Texas Gas Service Builders Hub (give total connected BTU load, equipment list and site plan); your registered plumber pulls the plumbing permit in AB+C, installs the piping, performs the air test with a Class 1A diaphragm gauge, and passes the City gas inspection; the City releases the meter and Texas Gas Service sets it.

Documents you’ll need

Fee
City plumbing permit fee — see DSD fee schedule; Texas Gas Service service-line and meter charges vary by project (quoted by Builder Services)
Processing time
Utility service-line installs commonly take weeks to months — start at design
Renewal
None
Who files
A Texas-licensed plumber registered with the City pulls the gas permit; you or the GC open the utility request.

Good to know

The gas meter is a classic opening-day blocker: the utility will not set it until the City inspection is released, and a new service line can take months. Builder Services: 866-206-9587, tgsbuilderservices@onegas.com.
