Certified Food Manager & Food Handler Certificates: Austin restaurant guide
Austin Public Health / Texas DSHS
What it is
Austin requires a Certified Food Manager on site during all hours of operation, and every food employee needs an accredited food handler certificate.
When a restaurant needs it
Before opening (CFM) and within 30 days of hire (food handlers).
How to apply
Pass a DSHS-approved or ANSI-accredited Certified Food Manager exam; staff take an ANSI- or State-of-Texas-accredited food handler course (classroom or online).
Documents you’ll need
- CFM certificate (post prominently)
- Food handler certificates for staff
Good to know
Austin no longer requires you to register food manager or handler certificates with the City — just keep them on file and post the CFM certificate.
